Android offers plenty of AI assistants, including the default Gemini app, which replaced Google Assistant, along with popular options like Perplexity and ChatGPT. While ChatGPT has been widely used, it previously lacked the option to be set as the default assistant. However, a recent update has changed that.
With a recent beta update to ChatGPT, users can now make it their default voice assistant on Android. In version 1.2025.070, the “Default digital assistant app” page in the Settings app lists ChatGPT as an option. Simply selecting it will set ChatGPT as your default assistant.
Additionally, you can assign the long-press power button shortcut to ChatGPT for quick access. However, this feature may not be available to all beta users yet, as some, even on the latest beta version, might not see the option in settings. The overlay bubble still needs refinement, as its animations are not as smooth as those of Gemini or Perplexity.
However, the power button shortcut isn’t the only way to launch ChatGPT on Android. Recently, the app introduced a Quick Settings tile for easy access. Pixel users can also activate ChatGPT using the bottom swipe gesture. These shortcuts are a great convenience for those who frequently use ChatGPT.
