WhatsApp is said to be in the process of developing a new feature that facilitates file sharing between users in close proximity. Drawing parallels with Android’s ‘Nearby Share’ functionality, this upcoming feature on WhatsApp would necessitate users to be physically near each other for seamless file exchange.

As reported by WABetaInfo, the file-sharing feature is currently accessible to users participating in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.2.17. To utilize this feature, users are required to navigate to a new section within the app dedicated to sending and receiving files. This development indicates WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to enhance its functionality, providing users with more convenient ways to share content when physically present in each other’s vicinity.

In addition to the proximity-based file-sharing feature, it appears that users may need to shake their devices to initiate a share request. This physical gesture adds a unique and interactive element to the file-sharing process within WhatsApp.

Furthermore, there seems to be a restriction on file transfers, limiting them to users present in the sender’s contact list. This ensures that the feature maintains a level of privacy and is limited to known contacts.

Importantly, similar to text messages and calls made via WhatsApp, the file-sharing functionality is reported to benefit from end-to-end encryption. This security measure is designed to protect the privacy and integrity of the shared files, ensuring that only the intended recipient can access and decipher the content.

The described functionality, though reminiscent of a feature long present on Android devices, brings a distinctive touch to file sharing within WhatsApp. The combination of enhanced encryption and the restriction to contacts on the list offers an added layer of privacy, making the feature particularly useful for sharing photos or videos in public spaces without exposing the device to those outside the user’s contact network.

However, it’s important to note that the file-sharing feature is reportedly still in the development phase. While it’s currently available to those on WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.2.17, it remains uncertain when or if this feature will be incorporated into the stable version of the app. Users can stay tuned for updates from WhatsApp as they continue refining and testing this new capability before a potential wider release.
