Google is reportedly developing a new “import AI chats” feature for Gemini that could allow users to transfer their conversation history from other chatbots such as ChatGPT and Claude.
As Gemini’s presence in the AI space continues to grow, many users have started moving away from ChatGPT to Google’s chatbot. One common frustration during this switch is losing past conversations, which means giving up personalized context and starting fresh every time.
According to tipster Testing Catalog, Google is working to solve this problem. The company is said to be testing an import AI chats tool, currently in beta, that would let users bring chat histories from other AI platforms directly into Gemini.
The feature is expected to preserve conversation context, allowing users to continue previous discussions without repeating background details. This could make switching between AI assistants far smoother.
However, a leaked screenshot suggests that imported chats will become part of a user’s Google Activity. Google notes that this data may be used to improve its services, including training generative AI models. Users will still have the option to manage or delete their activity at any time.
“Your imported and continued chats are saved in your Activity. This data is used to improve our services, including training generative AI models, and to protect users and the public,” the message reportedly states.
How Chat Transfers from ChatGPT to Gemini Could Work
Based on the leak, users will first need to download their conversation history from platforms like ChatGPT or Claude. Once downloaded, the file can be uploaded into Gemini using the Import AI Chats option.
After the upload, Gemini should be able to understand earlier conversations and maintain context, reducing the need to restate information.

- Click your profile icon in the top-right corner
- Go to Settings and select Data Controls
- Choose Export data and tap Export
- Confirm the export request
- OpenAI will email you a download link valid for 24 hours
- Download the ZIP file, which includes your chats in HTML format
