TikTok, the well-known short-video platform, faced a major service outage on Sunday that prevented thousands of users from accessing the app. The disruption appeared to impact users in several regions, leading to a wave of complaints on outage-tracking websites and social media.
Users experience access issues
Many TikTok users turned to Downdetector and Reddit to report problems with the service. Some said the app would not load at all, while others described an unstable experience in which videos failed to play or their feeds would not refresh. In several instances, users could open the app but encountered repeated errors while scrolling through content.
Downdetector records surge in reports
Downdetector data revealed that more than 36,000 users in the United States logged complaints during the outage. About 64% reported issues directly related to the TikTok app, 23% said the service was completely unavailable, and 13% noted problems with the feed or timeline not loading properly.
The outage map also showed that cities such as Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Tampa, Washington, Chicago, and Detroit were among the most affected, along with reports coming in from other regions.
TikTok yet to release official explanation
As of the time of writing, TikTok had not provided an official statement regarding the cause of the outage or when full service would be restored.
Social media responds with humor
As news of the disruption spread, social media users quickly reacted with jokes and memes. Platforms such as X, Instagram, and Reddit were filled with humorous posts about TikTok being unavailable, with many users joking about having to be productive without their usual stream of short-form videos. Others shared screenshots of error messages, turning the outage into a trending topic online.
One user on X wrote, “TikTok went down right after I logged into my editing account and now I can’t switch back to my main one — I’m so mad.”
Another posted, “I came to Twitter just to check if anyone else’s TikTok randomly stopped working in the middle of doom scrolling.”
A third user added, “I restarted TikTok, rebooted my phone, updated the app, turned off my Wi-Fi, and nothing worked. #tiktokdown.”
