India observes National Technology Day every year on May 11, marking the anniversary of the successful nuclear tests carried out in Pokhran in 1998. This day serves to celebrate the nation’s scientific accomplishments and technological progress, paying tribute to the valuable efforts of its scientists, engineers, and innovators. It also highlights India’s strides in technology and its growing potential for future innovations.

    Background of National Technology Day

On May 11, 1998, India achieved a major breakthrough by conducting a series of nuclear tests at the Pokhran testing range in Rajasthan, under the leadership of noted aerospace scientist Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Three underground nuclear tests were carried out on that day, followed by two more on May 13. These tests proved India’s capability to develop both thermonuclear and fission bombs, reinforcing its national security and global status.

This operation, dubbed Operation Shakti, made India the sixth country to enter the elite group of nuclear powers. The same day also witnessed the successful flight of Hansa-3, India’s first homegrown light two-seater aircraft used for surveillance and training, developed in Bengaluru. Additionally, the DRDO successfully test-fired the Trishul missile, a short-range surface-to-air missile, showcasing India’s growing strength in defense technology.

In recognition of these milestones, then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee officially declared May 11 as National Technology Day. Since 1999, this day has been observed annually to celebrate and encourage technological innovation across the nation.

    Why National Technology Day Matters

National Technology Day is a moment to honor the dedication and achievements of the scientists and engineers who have played a crucial role in advancing technology in India and around the world. It also serves to emphasize how technology has transformed everyday life, making it more efficient and accessible.

This day not only pays homage to the scientific community but also motivates future generations to embrace innovation and research. By remembering historic accomplishments such as Pokhran-II, Hansa-3, and the Trishul missile, the day highlights how technology contributes to national progress and underlines the importance of building a future rooted in sustainable and cutting-edge innovation.

Theme for National Technology Day 2025

The Technology Development Board (TDB), operating under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, has announced the official theme for National Technology Day 2025:
“YANTRA – Yugantar for Advancing New Technology, Research & Acceleration.”

The term YANTRA, deeply embedded in India’s scientific traditions and cultural identity, goes beyond just mechanical design—it symbolizes integrated systems, collaborative energy, and scalable innovations. The word Yugantar, which refers to a significant era of change, reflects India’s current transformation from being a technology adopter to emerging as a global leader in technological innovation.

The National Technology Day 2025 celebrations took place on May 11, 2025, under the leadership of the Technology Development Board (TDB) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The event will gather policymakers, scientists, technocrats, industry experts, academic institutions, and startup leaders to discuss strategies for fast-tracking India’s technological progress. Key focus areas will include deep-tech innovation, precision engineering, and breakthrough research and development.
