If you have ever used multiple Apple devices, you already know how powerful Continuity can be. From syncing Focus modes to handing off tasks between devices, Apple has created a seamless ecosystem. Now Google appears to be taking a similar path and that could be great news for Android users.
Google is reportedly expanding its cross device services and bringing Android closer to a unified ecosystem experience.
What Cross Device Services Does Android Support Right Now?
Currently Android supports two official cross device services that can be found in the Settings menu.Call Casting allows users to transfer video calls between Android devices signed in with the same Google account.
Internet Sharing lets you share Wi Fi or hotspot access with other Android devices without entering passwords.
These features are helpful but limited compared to what Apple offers. That may soon change.
Is Do Not Disturb Sync Coming to All Android Devices?
An APK teardown of Google Play Services version 26.02.31 suggests Google is developing Do Not Disturb sync across all connected Android devices.
Once enabled, activating Do Not Disturb on one device could automatically turn it on for every Android device signed in with the same Google account.
This mirrors a feature Apple users have enjoyed for years.
How Is This Different From Pixel and Samsung DND Sync?
Do Not Disturb syncing already exists within closed ecosystems.
Pixel phones can sync DND with Pixel Watch.
Samsung Galaxy phones can sync DND with Galaxy Watch.
The upcoming feature could remove brand limitations and allow DND syncing across multiple Android brands and device types.
Could This Create a True Android Ecosystem Experience?
This could be one of the biggest changes to Android in years. Instead of brand locked features, Android devices from different manufacturers could finally work together as one ecosystem.
This would be a major advantage over Apple’s hardware restricted approach.
Is a Universal Clipboard Finally Coming to Android?
The APK teardown also revealed renewed signs of a Universal Clipboard feature. This feature was first spotted last year and its return suggests it is still in development.
Universal Clipboard would allow users to copy text or images on one Android device and paste them instantly on another without third party apps or keyboards.
Will Android Support Task Handoff Between Devices?
Google is also rumored to be working on task handoff.
This feature would allow users to start a task on one Android device and continue it on another. Reading on your phone could be continued on a tablet or laptop without restarting the task.
This would bring Android even closer to Apple’s Continuity experience.
Is Google Copying Apple or Fixing Android’s Biggest Weakness?
Some may see this as Google copying Apple but it is more accurate to say Google is fixing a long standing gap in Android.
As an Android user, seeing Google adopt ideas that improve everyday usability is a welcome change.
When Could These Android Features Launch?
There is no official confirmation yet. However many believe these features could debut with Android 17, expected to arrive around June.
If true, this would mark one of the biggest ecosystem upgrades Android has ever received.
Is Android Finally Ready to Match Apple’s Ecosystem?
With Do Not Disturb sync, Universal Clipboard and task handoff on the horizon, Android could finally offer a seamless multi device experience.
For users invested in Android, the future looks more connected than ever.
