Gemini’s mobile app has seen rapid growth since the August launch of its Nano Banana image editor model, which has earned strong reviews from users praising its ability to handle complex edits and produce highly realistic images. The app has quickly risen to the top of global app store rankings, recording a 45% month-over-month increase in downloads so far in September, according to new data from app analytics firm Appfigures.
In just the first half of September, Gemini has already been downloaded 12.6 million times, compared to 8.7 million in August.

Previously, Gemini’s highest ranking on the U.S. App Store was No. 3 on January 28, 2025. Following the release of Nano Banana, it climbed to No. 2 on September 8, and by September 12, it hit No. 1, overtaking OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which dropped to second place. Currently, no other AI-focused apps are in the U.S. App Store’s top 10.
According to Appfigures data, Gemini has also climbed into the top five iPhone apps overall in 108 countries worldwide.
On Google Play, the app rose sharply from the No. 26 overall app in the U.S. on September 8 to the No. 2 spot by Monday. Interestingly, despite Android being Google’s own ecosystem, ChatGPT still holds the No. 1 position on the Play Store.
Google has been highlighting Gemini’s momentum, fueled by mainstream adoption of its new image-editing capabilities. For example, Josh Woodward, VP of Google Gemini and Google Labs, revealed on X that since the launch of the Nano Banana model, the app has attracted 23 million new users who have collectively shared over 500 million images.
The surge in usage has also translated into higher consumer spending. Out of Gemini’s $6.3 million in iOS revenue this year, $1.6 million came in August alone, following the release of Nano Banana. That represents a 1,291% jump compared to January’s $115,000, according to Appfigures.
With $792,000 generated so far in September—already nearly half of August’s total—Gemini is on pace to at least match, if not surpass, last month’s earnings.
Since launching on Android in February 2024 and later expanding to iOS, Gemini has accumulated 185.4 million total downloads, including 103.7 million in 2025 alone.
