Cloudflare launches 1.1.1.1 DNS service that will speed up your internet

Cloudflare launched its 1.1.1.1 DNS service earlier this year as a resolver that anyone could use free of charge. DNS services are used by internet service providers to resolve a domain name like Google.com into a real IP address for routers and switches to understand. DNS servers provided by ISPs are often slow and unreliable, and Cloudflare promises to speed up your internet with its 1.1.1.1 service. After a successful beta, it’s now arriving on iOS and Android.

The mobile app uses features like VPN support to push your mobile traffic towards the 1.1.1.1 DNS servers and improve speeds. It will also prevent your carrier from tracking your browsing history and potentially selling it. Cloudflare is promising not to track 1.1.1.1 users or sell ads, and the company has retained KPMG to perform an annual audit and publish a public report.

Depending on your mobile carrier, you could see some significant speed improvements. 1.1.1.1 is the fastest public resolver, but that doesn’t mean it will beat every single private ISP DNS service. You can download the app on iOS or Android to test and see whether this will make a difference to speed while you’re mobile.
