OpenAI has announced a new partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Razorpay, introducing Agentic Payments to ChatGPT — a feature that allows users to make UPI payments and complete purchases without leaving the chat window.
According to OpenAI, many users already use ChatGPT to discover products, compare prices, and plan purchases. The new pilot initiative takes it a step further by enabling the chatbot to complete transactions on behalf of the user, directly within the app.
As part of the pilot program, Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank are serving as key banking partners, while BigBasket, the Tata Group’s quick commerce platform, is one of the first to integrate this AI-powered shopping experience.
For example, users can ask:
“Help me order ingredients for a Thai-style vegetable curry for 4 people from BigBasket.”
ChatGPT will then browse BigBasket’s catalog, show suitable product options, and upon user confirmation, place the order through Razorpay’s payment infrastructure. Users will retain full control over the transaction with options for real-time tracking and instant order cancellation.
Beyond this pilot, OpenAI, Razorpay, and NPCI plan to explore broader AI-driven payment use cases, focusing on delivering a personalized, secure, and seamless AI commerce experience via UPI. They envision a future where AI agents can autonomously complete transactions on users’ behalf while maintaining strong privacy and security controls.
Commenting on the initiative, Oliver Jay, OpenAI’s Managing Director of International Strategy, said:
“AI is evolving from helping people find products to actually helping them buy them — while enabling sellers to reach millions. We’re excited to collaborate with NPCI to combine advanced AI with UPI, one of the world’s most trusted real-time payment systems, to usher in a new era of effortless and secure commerce.”
OpenAI has not yet shared details on when the feature will be widely rolled out or whether it will be exclusive to ChatGPT Plus or AI Agent users.
In a related update, NPCI recently introduced biometric authentication for UPI, allowing users to verify payments using fingerprint or facial recognition instead of a traditional PIN, marking another step toward more convenient and secure digital payments in India.
